How to Visit Professor Rouzie in the MOO

Yes, I have one office hour on-line in a MOO, a text-based virtual environment/chat space. Every Friday morning between 11:00 and 12:00, I will be in DaMOO, which is on a computer out in Northridge, CA. I have two "rooms" there where we'll be meeting twice with the Swedes, and also where I have the office hour.

Here's how to get there:

Go to the lab (Ellis 18) and open the application called Muddweller. If you can't find it on the apple menu, use the Find function on the File menu and type in Muddweller and hit Find. When you get to Muddweller, Click on the Configure menu and drag to and select TCP/IP Address. You'll see a box like this:

Fill in the empty boxes exactly as you seem them above. Then go back to the Configuration many and select Open Connection. In a moment some text will appear in the window welcoming you to DaMOO.

With your mouse, enlarge the window by clicking and dragging on the right bottom corner edge and pulling it down and out. Then enlarge the writing space at the bottom by pointing the mouse cursor on the line across the bottom until the cursor flattens out. Click and drag the line UP to create a larger bottom writing space. You will write in this space and read in the upper space. To send a command, type it in and press <return>.

Type "connect guest" (without quotes) and read what comes on the screen. At this point, type "@name <the name you want to use>" (use your real name). Ex. Jill_guest. Next you need to describe yourself. Type "@describe me as <a description of your character>

Example:
Munchkin types this:
@describe me as "a very fine fellow, if a bit on the short side."
People who type 'look Munchkin' now see this:
You see a very fine fellow, if a bit on the short side.

Now type "out" and hit <return> to enter the MOO.

You can go to my room now. To go there, type "@join albertoid" or @join #4040" You will see the description of my room and a list of the objects there. You can read the description of any object (including characters) by typing look <the name of the object> Include any articles you see, so if it says "a sofa" you would type "look a sofa." Be sure to look at me: "look albertoid"

To talk:
Simply type a quotation mark before your lines. None is needed at the end of the message.

"Hi, albertoid!

will translate to me as
Jill_guest exclaims "Hi, albertoid!"

When we are done talking, type "@quit" to log out. Then quit Muddweller.

This is enough for now to get you started. For more MOO commands (moving around, performing actions and relating thoughts etc) check out the following:
