T A T T O O S

Tattoos are a very visible way of writing the body, reflecting two of the three ways of writing the body mentioned on the home page. Although obviously not a reflection of inherent physical characteristics, tattoos do present both the wearer and the observer with fertile ground for personal expression. Unfortunately, it's not always possible to know why someone got a tattoo. However, we can speculate, and we can certainly get in touch with our response(s) to someone else's tattoo(s). This page will present you with a few suggestions for reading what tattoos have written, and then provide you with a few tattoos for you to explore on your own.

his tattoo has a definite Celtic flair. The wearer may be of Celtic ancestry, enjoy the colorful depiction, or perhaps is identifying with a particular culture or group. In writing our own meanings, we may think of this person as vain because of the bright colors, bold to make such a loud statement, or insecure and wanting to stand out.

nother, more familiar tattoo is the armband. This type of tattoo is often worn as a sign of oppression or sympathy with oppression, or as a way to make the wearer look "tough." Unlike the typical barbed wire armband popular today, however, this tattoo is more curvaceous and less harsh in its presentation. In writing meaning to it, we might assume the wearer is effeminate, or possibly trying to look cool without making as strong statement as barbed wire.
