ideology--

"is both the set of images used to suppress class struggle and the system of beliefs promoted by these images" (CGLT 87). This works on the theory that "the lower classes are more likely to accept their social positions when they internalize the view or perception of reality provided by books, newspapers, magazines, televison and films, along with the standard messages of institutions such as governments, schools, and churches, than they would if they were focibly kept in their places by a military or police state" (87).

The effectiveness if ideology depends on the consumer's acceptance of reification.

reification--"treating of an abstract notion as if it were a reality" (88)
