1977 Ad hoc committee forms to create and begin implementation of women's studies curriculum.
1979 College of Arts and Sciences names Nancy Bain as the first coordinator. The Women's Studies Program is approved by University Curriculum Committee. The introductory women's studies course, WS 100, is offered, taught by Nancy Bain.
1980 Two committees are formed--the Women's Studies Curriculum Committee and the Women Studies Programming Committee--to further the expansion of the program. The capstone course, WS 400, is offered. Eighteen courses are cross-listed in twelve departments; all carry women's studies credit. The first Women's Studies Undergraduate Certificate is awarded.
1982 Program sponsors "Making Our Lives a Study: A Conference on Feminist Criticism and Creativity." This nationally advertised event draws more than 400 registrants to Athens and features several speakers, such as Toni Cade Bambara, Carolyn Heilbrun, and Marge Piercy. During the conference, the program hosts the North Central Women's Studies Association meeting.
1983 The first issue of the Awakening, the women's studies student newsletter, is published.
1984 Twenty-four courses carry women's studies credit in eleven departments, and fifty-five students pursue certificates.
1985 Graduate Women's Studies Certificate Program is approved by the University Curriculum Committee.
1988-90 The first Graduate Women's Studies Certificate is awarded. The program receives grant awarding stipends to faculty to revise courses reflecting new scholarship on women.
1991 Program hosts North Central Women's Studies Association regional conference, "Acknowledging Individual Differences: Can Women Find Unity through Diversity?"
1994 The Women's Studies Program celebrates its fifteenth anniversary.
1995 A new course, WS 200, "Issues in Feminism" is taught for the first time. Over 40 courses available for Women's Studies credit are offered.
1996 Four new scholarships are offered: the Ethel H. Moll Scholarship; the Elizabeth Antonucci Scholarship; the Donna Chen Women's Equity Award; and the Ariel Hollinshead Award for Mentoring Women in Science.
1997 WS 250, "The History of Feminist Thought," is offered for the first time.
2000 The Program begins to work on creating an undergraduate major in Women's Studies.
