WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK

Social Work is a dynamic, challenging, and changing profession. Social Work's historic mission has been to help the disadvantaged--those who have been excluded from participation in the ideal of a just and equitable society. But the contemporary social worker also assists people from all walks of life with all kinds of problems in all kinds of settings--rich and poor, black and white, young and old, in hospitals, in clinics, or in the workplace.

In 1968, the university established the Department of Social Work as a separate department within the College of Arts an Sciences. The department was initially accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, and it has maintained that status since then, with its most recent reaffirmation in 1995.
