Research Interests:

My research interests lie in urban and economic geography, although they spill over into many other areas, including development studies, migration studies and Asian studies. I am particularly interested in the interplay of globalization and urbanization in world cities. I have just published a co-authored book, Cities and Economies (Routledge, 2007), on the urban impact of globalization. My recent research has focused on the glaring contrast between economic globalness and cultural localness in Seoul, South Korea. While working on the newly-forming labor migration flows from developing parts of Asia to Seoul, I noticed a strong presence of ethnic Korean migrants from Northeast China in the city's foreign workforce. This prompted me to investigate how South Koreans have engaged in "othering" their co-ethnic returnees. I plan to broaden this research to investigate the homecoming experiences of the return migrants and the socio-economic impact of their return on the home community in Northeast China. I have already conducted extensive fieldwork in South Korea and I now plan to visit Northeast China to interview Korean Chinese workers.
