Deadlines and Forms

If you are considering applying, please read the graduate handbook and contact the Graduate Chair, Dr. James Lein, who can answer your questions. Applicants to the master's degree program must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited United States university or an equivalent degree from an international institution. In addition, applicants must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Our application deadline to be considered for financial aid is February 15. Because of time constraints in assembling application materials at the Graduate College, the deadline for international applicants is February 1. Please note that all applicants must follow the Graduate College’s application procedures and submit the appropriate documents to the Graduate College. Applicants whose native language is not English are encouraged to take the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test), which includes a speaking section.

The Department of Geography requires the following materials, which applicants are encouraged to submit as part of the online application process:

  • Statement of Purpose, which describes why the applicant wishes to pursue a graduate degree in this department, what s/he intends to get out of the program, and how the degree will support his or her academic or career goals. This approximately two-page  statement is very important in helping the Graduate Committee evaluate the applicant’s qualifications and “fit” with the program.
  • Resume or C.V.
  • Three letters of reference.  Referees should thoroughly address the applicant’s academic ability, work ethic, and suitability for this program.  Although you are encouraged to use the online submission, individual referees may submit their letters directly to the department. Letters should be on official letterhead, and attached to recommendation forms available online.
  • GRE scores. These should be sent directly to the Department of Geography, addressed to the Graduate Chair. (International applicants are not required to take the GRE.)

Spousal and Domestic Partner Educational Opportunities are available to spouses and domestic partners of graduate students who hold an RA, GA, or TA appointment. The benefit pays half of the instructional fee (not the general fee) up to six credit hours per quarter during the period or period(s) in which your appointment is in effect. Spousal and Domestic Partner Educational Opportunities cannot be used to pay for OPIE courses or courses taken for Audit. Application forms are available in the Graduate College or can be downloaded from www.ohio.edu/graduate/gradForms.cfm. Applications must be completed and returned to the Graduate College prior to the 15th day of the quarter for which the student is seeking the benefit.
